The islands shelter much wildlife and in particular the Chincoteague Ponies, White-tailed deer, Sika elk, Red fox and more than 250 species of raptors, songbirds, and shorebirds, which hunt and forage for food in the adjacent bays and salt marshes. Beginning in mid September migratory birds stop by on their way south. The forested Assateague Island and the Chincoteague Refuge provides habitat for millions of migrating songbirds.
