Decoy Carvers and Artists Association

The Chincoteague Decoy Carvers and Artists Association began in 1983 with fifteen members whose intention was to create an educational and charitable organization that would become a link between the past and the future.

The foundation of this organization is built upon the traditions established by renowned decoy carvers such as Miles Hancock, Ira Hudson, Doug Jester, Umbrella Watson and many others. The association seeks to preserve the traditional customs of excellence in craftsmanship, love of hunting and appreciation for wildlife and nature.

As the years go by, our desire is to always follow in their footsteps. Our goal is to ensure that what was once a way of life will never be forgotten.

The future of traditional decoy carving on Chincoteague Island looks promising.  Our commitment is to embrace the future with a renewed appreciation of our past. Our objective is to preserve these original “Chincoteague Traditions” for future generations.

Please accept our invitation to join us at our meetings. Our membership is not just limited to decoy carvers. Flatwork artists, photographers and just admirers of the art form are always welcome.  The meetings are held the third Thursday of the month at the Refuge Motor Inn, 7058 Maddox Blvd, Chincoteague Island, Virginia.
