Ocean City History and Attractions:

Maryland's only coastal town, Ocean City is located on 10-mile long Fenwick Island and until 1869, was largely ignored except for a handful of fishermen who crossed to the Island in rowboats on Sinepuxent Bay.   An enterprising farmer, Isaac Coffin, built a small in on Fenwick Island to lodge the fishermen in 1869.   He was soon joined by other hoteliers who saw the value of the island as a summer beach resort.  Ocean City was incorporated in 1875, and flourished with the opening of the railroad bridge over Sinepuxent Bay.

Ocean City was developed from south to north, with the shops, hotels, and cottages below Division Street remaining much as they were in the early 20th century when that area was the heart of the town.  Construction of the first Ocean City Boardwalk began in 1900, taking fifteen years to complete.

When a 4-day storm in 1933 carved an inlet in Fenwick Island, linking Sinepuxent Bay with the Atlantic, Ocean City began drawing hordes of sport fishermen.  Within a year it earned the title, "The White Marlin Capital of the World."   Arrange a private deep sea fishing charter at one of Ocean City's five piers or look for a spot on a public fishing boat during your Chincoteague Island to Ocean City day trip.

The Ocean City marinas also rent parasailing, jet skiing, and wind surfing equipment, and the 10-mile beach is perfect for simple sunbathing and swimming.   The Boardwalk extends along three miles of the beach, from the inlet to 27th Street, and is lined with restaurants, arcades, and shops.

Rent a bike and follow the newly-opened Haven Avenue Bike Route from 9th to 34th Streets, winding through the Howard Stainton Wildlife Refuge.  The Refuge's marsh is home to many of the migratory waterfowl which travel the Great Atlantic Flyway.

For hiking, visit The Malibu Beach Wildlife Management Area.  It's been recently restored with native plants to attract and protect song and coastal birds.  Fish for tautog or bluefish off the pier.  Visit one of Fenwick Island's last undeveloped areas at Corson's Inlet State Park, and hike the sand dunes or try your luck fishing and crabbing
Or bring along your golf bag and hit the 12-hole Ocean City Municipal Golf Course.

If you have the kids in tow on your Chincoteague Island to Ocean City day trip, if your have the kids in tow, is Trimper's Rides and Amusements Park.  Along with the latest in thrill rides, the park has a 1902 50-foot diameter hand carved carousel.  Or head for Jolly Roger Amusement Park.
