Hiking & Bicycling

If you enjoy beach hiking Assateague Island in Virginia has 10 miles of uninhabited pristine beach with windswept dunes, beautiful all times of the year but best enjoyed in the fall or spring when there are no crowds and hikers enjoy a pleasant temperature range. Winter, however; has its on allure of a desolate wilderness beach untouched by the modern world. Hike 11 miles north along the beach and eventually you'll reach Maryland's Assateague National Seashore.

Bike Riding on Assateague IslandAssateague Island is on the Atlantic flyway for migratory birds and Chincoteague is one of the best places to see them.  Visitors can rent bicycles and ride across the bridge to Assateague and ride the trails along the dunes or on paths in the maritime forest. A very pleasant walk or bike ride is the three-mile Wildlife Loop around Snow Goose Pond where tens of thousands of snow geese converge in November and December. Another very enjoyable walk is the 1.5-mile Woodland Trail which passes through a peaceful maritime forest to an overlook where the Chincoteague ponies can usually be seen.

The town of Chincoteague offers great places to take off with a bike or walk. Everything is close and has the perfect blend of a small town and wilderness. Each year more bike paths are installed and many more are planned. There is a path at Memorial Park for your walking pleasure and plenty of playground equipment for the kids.
